Thinking About Change
Imagine rolling out a mandatory respirator program…
It’s a technical change, right?
If you’ve spent much time in an industrial setting in the past decade, you know that “wear this new PPE” seldom goes smoothly.
Especially when there’s real impacts to peoples’ day to day lives: like no longer being allowed to have a beard, or having to carve out the time to be clean shave every morning.
There’s the increased difficulty in communicating with each other due to wearing respirators.
There’s complaints that they are uncomfortable.
There’s not short-term, immediate health consequences to make the consequences of not wearing a respirator “real”.
Those are just some highlights (lowlights) and objections to respirators. There’s also training, fitting programs, inventory management, determining and enforcing a new discipline escalation system, a rewards and communication plan, signage, storage and a million little details required to have a successful, safe, rollout.
Creating a cohesive plan, to bring your organization along for the ride, is where Maple Change Consulting can support.
Respirators are a technical change with a concrete outcome. More challenging are cultural changes, like the move to culture based safety programs, or creating respectful diverse workplaces.
